BENSON — What were already exceedingly thin hopes for a fourth consecutive 3-A Quad County Conference varsity volleyball championship for Hunt High were extinguished altogether by a West Johnston team celebrating its Senior Day with a three-game sweep of the Warriors on Tuesday, Oct. 8.

Hunt, which failed to beat either Quad County co-leader West or South Johnston in four tries, slid to 9-4 and just a half-game up on C.B. Aycock for third place. Hunt, 11-9 overall, will visit Fike on Thursday and a win would lock up an NCHSAA 3-A playoff berth as the QCC’s No. 3 team.

The Wildcats (14-6, 11-2 QCC) will visit South Johnston (16-5, 11-2) for a winner-take-all match to decide the conference title.

In Tuesday’s 25-13, 25-22, 25-21 loss, Hunt was led by senior Presley Frazier with 11 kills and 11 digs to go with two blocks while freshman Makenzie Collins had nine kills and nine digs. Collins and senior Paige Mathews each served three aces while Savannah Comstock dished out 16 assists. Kayla Battle added four blocks and three kills.

Eagles fly into TAC championship match

GOLDSBORO — It took five sets but the Sallie B. Howard School volleyball team earned a spot in Wednesday’s Triangle Athletic Conference championship match by conquering host Wayne Prep on Monday.

The Eagles, now 8-6, will take on Riverside Christian, the team that shared the regular-season title with them in the championship match for the Carolina Athletic Association of Schools for Choice league that will be played at Wayne Prep as well.

Leading the Eagles in their 14-25, 26-24, 25-19, 18-25, 15-13 victory Monday were Makayla Opie, Sameria Miller, Kyra Jones and Uriyjah Chance.

Ladybirds rally to hold onto Big East lead

ROCKY MOUNT — Southern Nash was in danger of losing its lead atop the 2-A/3-A Big East Conference varsity volleyball standings after a fired-up Northern Nash squad won the first two games of its Senior Night clash with the Ladybirds.

Instead, Southern Nash rallied to win in five sets — 23-25, 23-25, 25-13, 25-15, 15-8 — to hold onto first place at 9-2. The 3-A Ladybirds, 16-2 overall, will visit 3-A Franklinton (10-9, 7-3 Big East) with the outright Big East title on the line Thursday.

Senior Ava Pate swung for 27 kills to spark Southern Nash while classmate Carlee Beckham had 20 digs and 13 kills and Savanna Baines added six kills.

    GIRLS GOLF

SN takes Big East match at Peachtree

SPRING HOPE — Southern Nash’s girls golf team worked overtime Monday as the Ladybirds won the 2-A/3-A Big East Conference’s regularly-scheduled match at Peachtree Hills Country Club after taking second in the resumption of a suspended match.

Ladybirds junior Alaina Bailey was the medalist in Monday’s regular match with a 52 while teammates Audrey Jones, Makayla Weeks and Adison Bailey were a stroke back at 53. Bryleigh Colbert shot 54 as well as Soutehrn Nash posted a team score of 158.

In the completion of the earlier match, the 3-A Ladybirds took second as Jones led them with a 49 and Weeks shot 52.
