In North Carolina, traditions like The Andy Griffith Show and Doc Watson’s bluegrass take us back to simpler times. But while those live on in memories, Cheerwine—North Carolina's iconic cherry soda—remains as relevant as ever.

Cheerwine’s story began in 1917, in Salisbury, when Lewis D. Peeler created the soda during WWI.

Due to sugar shortages, Peeler used cherry flavoring to sweeten the drink, and its distinct flavor quickly became a hit. The name "Cheerwine" came from its cheerful taste and deep burgundy color, even though there’s no actual wine involved.

Over the years, this fizzy soda became a staple in the Carolinas, especially alongside North Carolina BBQ. Whether you’re enjoying the vinegar-based Lexington style or something more tomato-heavy, a cold Cheerwine always pairs perfectly. The soda’s signature blend of cherry and cola with extra bubbles makes it a refreshing treat, and fans swear it’s nothing like a typical cherry cola.

Though once hard to find outside the state, Cheerwine has since expanded its reach. Today, it can be ordered online and found in retailers like Cracker Barrel, spreading North Carolina's cheer far beyond its borders.

For more than 100 years, Cheerwine has captured the hearts of Carolinians, standing strong as a symbol of the state’s charm and hospitality.

Have you ever tried this Carolina classic? If not, it's time to raise a bottle and see what makes it so special!
