Transportation Contractor Associated With USPS Is Closing Two FL Terminals, Laying Off Over 500

2023 and 2024 have been rough years for parts of the trucking industry. According to Costa Systems, in 2023, 80,000 trucking companies shut down operations. In the summer of 2024, I reported on three trucking companies that filed for bankruptcy in July of 2024 alone in Florida. And now, transportation company Midwest Transport, Inc., is shutting down Florida facilities and laying off hundreds.

About Midwest Transport, Inc.: According to the company's website, it is "one of the largest transportation contractors associated with the United States Postal Service."

They have a team of around 600 and a fleet of over 450.

Employees give the company 2.3 out of 5 stars on Indeed. While a few said it was a nice place to work as a driver, others criticized the management and equipment.

One former employee in Tampa wrote:

"Not a bad place to work. Hours vary loads often get canceled and equipment is poorly maintained by shop and drivers. Managers seem to try their best but the turnover rate is extremely high."

About The Closures And Layoffs: According to warn letter, the company is closing and laying off employees in its Tampa and Jacksonville terminals. Affected employees include truckers, mechanics, dispatchers, and support staff.

There will also be closures in Illinois, Pennsylvania, and Tennessee. In total, 504 employees will be affected.

An employee who worked at the Tampa facility, Anthony Ballog, is suing the company alleging that the company failed to give 60 days' notice of the layoffs.

However, the company's warn letter alleges that it could not provide 60 days notice due to a sudden and unexpected demand by a large creditor.
