One of the biggest games of the regular season kicks off this weekend. A ranked matchup between No. 2 Ohio State and No. 3 Oregon in Eugene guaranteed to have a College Football Playoff type of feel in Autzen Stadium.

Ohio State’s new offensive coordinator Chip Kelly joined the staff this offseason, previously serving as the head coach for the Ducks from 2009 to 2012. A program that’s now led by Dan Lanning , who will be looking for his first signature win within the Big Ten on Saturday.

“I just think over time it’s changed a lot from when Chip was there and Dan’s got his own style, and his own scheme on both sides of the ball, and different coordinators,” Ohio State head coach Ryan Day said. “But from back when Chip was there and even before that, to where they are now, again one of the one of the best programs in the country, and they do a great job and, and they play hard.”

Lanning is in the midst of his third season with the Ducks, previously spending four years at Georgia as a position coach and defensive coordinator. Looking to continue building up a powerhouse program on the West Coast with a high-powered offense and his own defensive philosophies from his time in the SEC.

“I think there’s a lot of differences there. You just kind of watch it and you say well, it’s the same tree and everything, but there’s some similarities, but there’s there’s a lot of differences there as well,” Day said comparing Georgia and Oregon’s scheme. “You try to do everything you can to fit your scheme to what your players can do well, and it’s different players. But there’s certainly things in common.”

For years Ryan Day was the offensive playcaller for the Buckeyes, a responsibility that now falls on the shoulders of Kelly. Who went in depth about what makes Lanning’s defensive scheme unique for an Oregon program he’s more than familiar with.

“I think there’s movement involved in the front. They move in and out of three-down and four-down (lineman). They can blitz you for internally, they can blitz you from the edges, and I think they always seem like they’re close and coverage,” Kelly explained. “Like you don’t turn the tape on and see a lot of guys running free.”

“I think they do a really good job of mixing their coverages with their fronts, and it can present some problems to you if you’re not prepared for it,” he added. “So that’s the challenge for us this week is that it’s a really well-coordinated defense, both on the front end and on the back end.”

There’s no question that a lot of eyes will be on the matchup between Ohio State’s high-scoring offense with superstars all over the field and the stingy defense of the Ducks that was the best in the Pac-12 last season. Facing off this Saturday at 7:30 p.m. ET in a game airing on NBC and streaming on Fubo.
