MAPLEWOOD, N.J. (1010 WINS) — Two middle school students were injured when they were struck by a car while walking to school in New Jersey Monday morning, authorities said.

According to officials, at around 8 a.m. the students were walking on Prospect Street near Oakland Road in Maplewood when the driver was heading south on Prospect Street and hit the two children.

One student was taken with a parent to a local hospital and treated for non-life-threatening injuries. The second child's parent declined medical transport, authorities said.

The driver remained at the scene. He was issued summonses for careless driving and failure to yield to a pedestrian, police said.
