DANVILLE — A Georgetown man has been sentenced to five years in prison for strangling his girlfriend earlier this year and unlawfully possessing a firearm.

Glen R. Mott, 39, pleaded guilty Friday to one count of aggravated domestic battery and one count of unlawful possession of a weapon before Vermilion County Judge Robert McIntire, who accepted the sentence recommended by the state and Mott’s attorney.

In exchange for the negotiated plea deal, the state dismissed two other counts of domestic battery.

The charges stemmed from a June 18 incident in which Danville police were called to a residence for a report of a domestic battery.

Prosecutors presented evidence that a woman told to police that her boyfriend, Mott, had grabbed her, slammed her to the floor, pointed a handgun at her face and subsequently choked her until she temporarily lost consciousness.

A witness reported hearing the woman yell for Mott to leave and Mott threatening to kill the woman before she was able to run away to get help.

Danville police searched the residence and found a handgun that matched the description given by the victim.

It had a live round in the chamber and four rounds in the magazine.

“Felons who commit acts of domestic violence pose a significant threat to not only the victims and their families, but also to the community as a whole,” Vermilion County State’s Attorney Jacqueline Lacy said.

Mott faced three to seven years in prison for aggravated domestic battery involving strangulation, a Class 2 felony.

He was sentenced to five years in prison on both counts but ordered to serve the sentences concurrently.

Mott had credit for 107 days already served in jail and must serve at least 85 percent of his sentence.
