BrucePac, a Durant, Oklahoma-based establishment, is recalling approximately 9,986,245 pounds of ready-to-eat (RTE) meat and poultry products due to potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced today.

The affected products, produced between June 19, 2024, and October 8, 2024, were distributed to establishments, restaurants, and institutions nationwide, the FSIS. says.

The recall involves products bearing establishment numbers "51205 or P-51205" inside or beneath the USDA mark of inspection, according to FSIS.

The contamination was identified during routine testing, FSIS stated. Subsequent investigations confirmed that the affected RTE chicken products from BrucePac were contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.

FSIS advises restaurants, institutions, and consumers not to serve or use the recalled products. Any affected items should be discarded or returned to the place of purchase.

    Listeria

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), each year, an estimated 1,600 people in the U.S. are infected, and 260 die from the infection, the CDC says.

Pregnant individuals, newborns, adults 65 and older, and those with weakened immune systems are at higher risk. Listeria infection can lead to invasive illness, causing severe complications, including miscarriages or stillbirths, according to the CDC.

Individuals experiencing symptoms such as fever, muscle aches, or gastrointestinal distress after consuming potentially contaminated products should seek medical attention, the CDC says.

Notably, according to FSIS, it routinely conducts recall effectiveness checks to verify recalling firms notify their customers of the recall and that steps are taken to make certain that the product is no longer available to consumers.

Additionally, when available, the retail distribution list(s) will be posted on the FSIS website at www.fsis.usda.gov/recalls.
