Bridgeport police say that Saturday's officer-involved shooting was not the first time they have had to respond to a call at that address or the first time that the suspect, identified as 45-year-old Huntley Jackson, has attacked them. Bridgeport Chief of Police Roderick Porter says this most recent incident started with a call because Jackson was refusing to take his medication and was having what was described as "an emotional or mental health crisis."
Body-camera footage released by the state shows officers attempting to talk to him and open the door before he attacked one officer with a knife, stabbing them the shoulder, neck and head. One officer opened fire in response, hitting Jackson in the torso. "From my perspective, my officers acted professionally, and they acted according to their training, and they showed due care in this situation, not only for the suspect, but for his family as well," says Porter. Back in December 2022, police say Jackson also attacked medical responders and police who were trying to help him while responding to a call at the same address. He was arrested then as well. Speaking to the family of Jackson, Porter said, "I hope their loved one recovers, and I hope that they also receive the support that they may need, because this is obviously a tragic and very emotional situation." Porter says that the officer who was hurt is now out of the hospital and expected to be OK physically. The officer who fired their gun is currently on administrative status, which is standard protocol, while the other two who were there are out on sick leave. "
