UPDATE: Harris Resigns as Head Football Coach at AHSTW; Comments From School Superintendent

(Avoca, IA) — In a sudden and surprising development, GG Harris has resigned as Head Football Coach at AHSTW High School.

In a statement to KSOM/KS 95, Harris says “In the best interest of the team and for everyone to move forward, I have made the decision to step down as head football coach. Sometimes it’s more than just wins and losses. Sometimes it’s more than just about football At this moment, it’s one of those times.” Harris declined to say any more.

The Vikings are the middle of a 4-2 season and needed to win their last two games against Red Oak and Shenandoah to potentially secure a playoff spot. However, from Harris’ statement this is more about what is happening off the field than on it.

AHSTW Superintendent Darin Jones talks about the situation

Harris will remain as the Boys Basketball Head Coach and Excel Program Learning Teacher in the AHSTW district. Jones would not comment on who will run the football program in Harris’ absence but he did confirm that one of the assistants will be promoted on an interim status. Jones would not comment on why Harris decided to step away so suddenly.

Harris was an assistant football coach for AHSTW for seven seasons, the last three as Defensive Coordinator. In 2018, the Vikings went to the state championship and lost to Hudson 30-7. Then Head Coach Davis Pattee stepped down to go to Harlan — Pattee is now the Principal at AHSTW. Harris took over the head coaching position starting the 2019 season. His career record as of now is 31-19. The most successful season was 2022 when AHSTW went 10-1 and advanced to the quarterfinals of the Class 1A playoffs. A year ago, the Vikings went 6-4, made the playoffs and were knocked out in the second round.
