New income limits for Avista Utilities’ My Energy Discount program took effect Oct. 1, giving more Washington State residential customers the opportunity to qualify for a lower monthly energy bill.

“We’re excited to expand ongoing bill discounts to more people,” said Kelsey Solberg, Avista’s senior energy program manager. “Even if someone didn’t qualify last year, they may now.”

Almost 51,000 Washington customers are currently participating in the My Energy Discount program, and Avista estimates that close to 90,000 more customers qualify but have not yet signed up for the program.

“Applying takes just a few minutes, and there’s no paperwork needed,” Solberg said. “People don’t have to make appointments anymore, either. Just fill out an online application, call Avista or visit a local community action agency.”

Eligibility varies by county and is based on household size and income. Limits increased across nearly all of Avista’s Washington service territory. For example, a single person living in Spokane County can now earn up to $54,800 a year and qualify, while a household of four can now earn up to $78,300 a year and qualify, according to Avista.

“So many people who qualify don’t know they can get help,” said Solberg. “College students, seniors, young families, and people who’ve generally been excluded from assistance in the past are now able to access relief with My Energy Discount.”

Once approved, participants will keep their discount for two years before having to apply again for the program.

“Everyone who qualifies for My Energy Discount can get help,” Solberg said. “If you or someone you know could benefit from a lower monthly bill, don’t wait to see if you qualify. Sign up now.”
