CLEVELAND, OH — University Hospitals Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital has once again been recognized as one of the top children’s hospitals in the nation by U.S. News & World Report for the 2024-2025 rankings. The Cleveland-based hospital ranked among the top 50 children’s hospitals across 11 pediatric specialties, with five of those specialties placing in the top 25. Among the standout rankings, UH Rainbow is No. 9 nationally for neonatology, a significant achievement underscoring its prominence in newborn care. It also holds the distinction of being the No. 3 children’s hospital in both Ohio and the Midwest.

“We are proud to be recognized again by U.S. News & World Report as one of the top children’s hospitals in the country,” said Patti DePompei, RN, MSN, President of UH Rainbow and UH MacDonald Women’s Hospital. “We know families utilize these resources to make important decisions about their child’s care. We have an incredibly talented team of physicians and caregivers, and this national recognition is truly a testament to their unwavering dedication to our patients and the communities we serve.”

UH Rainbow’s specialties that ranked within the top 50 nationally include diabetes and endocrinology (#12), orthopedics (#13), pulmonology and lung surgery (#15), and urology (#24). Other specialties, such as cancer and neurology and neurosurgery, also received national rankings, with the hospital ranking Number 30 and 35 in those areas, respectively. This year’s report also recognized UH Rainbow’s behavioral health services, a specialty added to the rankings for the first time.

Marlene Miller, MD, MSc, Pediatrician-in-Chief at University Hospitals and Chair of the Department of Pediatrics at UH Rainbow, highlighted the hospital’s commitment to providing exceptional care for patients, regardless of the complexity of their cases. “Our depth and breadth of experience caring for neonates is unmatched in our area, due in part to our legacy of groundbreaking research and culture of innovation,” Dr. Miller said. “We strive to provide the highest quality, patient-centered healthcare for all children regardless of their medical complexities, from the tiniest newborns to young adults.”

In addition to the clinical accomplishments, UH Rainbow has emphasized diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in its care delivery, an area that U.S. News & World Report has placed greater emphasis on in its evaluations. “We applaud U.S. News for increasing their weightings relative to children’s hospitals’ commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion as well as best practices,” said Charles Macias, MD, MPH, Vice Chair for Quality & Safety at UH Rainbow. “Over the past few years, our quality and safety team has launched over 160 quality initiatives that continue to drive increased clinical outcomes.”

U.S. News & World Report, in collaboration with RTI International, gathered data from 108 children’s hospitals nationwide and conducted surveys of thousands of pediatric specialists to compile the rankings. Key metrics include clinical outcomes, hospital resources related to patient care, and expert opinion from the medical community.

The annual rankings provide families with critical insights into the quality of pediatric care offered across the country. “U.S. News & World Report’s annual Best Children’s Hospitals evaluation empowers parents and caregivers with a data-driven guide to help them find the best pediatric hospital to treat their child,” said Ben Harder, chief of health analysis and managing editor at U.S. News.

In addition to the success of UH Rainbow, its partner institution, UH Cleveland Medical Center, was also included in U.S. News & World Report’s Best Hospitals list for the 26th consecutive year in 2024. The medical center is ranked third among hospitals in Ohio and is the only hospital in the state to make the list of Best Regional Hospitals for Equitable Access.
