Taste of Tucker organizers say this year’s event was a success, despite competition from sporting events, homecoming celebrations and a hotter-than-usual day.

Co-founder Karen Wood said although attendance was down slightly with estimates of 4,000-to-5,000 people, the amount that will be donated to its two designated charities will probably be about the same as last year’s total of $50,000.

“NETWorks has been a beneficiary since the event was started as we have always supported their ministry,” Wood said. “And Camp Kudzu was added after our son was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. We do not have final numbers calculated for the year but hope to be in line with last year despite slightly lower attendance.”

The event added several new restaurant vendors and a VIP experience for attendees. Wood said several vendors ran out of food before the day ended – “not a good thing, but it was good food.”

Overall, Wood called the event a great success.

“Any day you can get out and enjoy a beautiful day with the community is a win – and raising money for our beneficiaries makes it even better,” she said. “We love the Tucker community and are very fortunate to have their support.”

The event started in 2010 by Karen and her husband Art in conjunction with Tucker First Methodist Church. The event, which featured 13 restaurants, was held for three years in its parking lot.

As the event expanded to include family entertainment and other activities, it outgrew the venue, and it was moved to Main Street, where it has drawn large crowds each year.
