RICHLAND, Wash. — The volunteer organization A Better Richland submitted more than 3,800 signatures from Richland residents to city hall Tuesday. This is part of an initiative trying to change the way council members are elected. Right now, all seven Richland city council members are ‘at-large,’ which means they can reside from any part of the city.
A Better Richland wants to split the city into five districts, with one council member from each of those districts, and then only two at-large positions.
The goal for this group is to bring more representation to parts of Richland.
RICHLAND, Wash. — The City of Richland is the only one left in the Tri-Cities where all seven members of the City Council are elected At-Large, rather than by district. A group called, ‘A Better Richland’ said the majority of the city does not get representation on the council level because of this. Members of ‘A Better Richland’ said none of the city council members live in central Richland, all residing in south Richland.
“All politics is local, and this would make it more local,” said Edward Temple, a Richland resident and one of the volunteers. “You're more likely to see your representative taking a walk in the morning, or riding the bike, at the grocery store.”
A Better Richland presented those 3,800+ signatures to the city clerk, and she will then get those to the election office to verify the signatures. Once that is done, and if they are verified, it will go to the city council.
The council has the options of voting on implementing the change, or bringing it to the community to vote on in a future election.
