A new ordinance in the city of Gresham has doused backyard burns.

The ban was enacted to keep air heathy, per Oregon Department of Environmental Quality guidelines. The ban includes all houses and properties within city limits. Barbecues, smokers and recreational fire pits are still allowed.

Firewood is the only material allowed to burn in an outdoor fireplace or firepit. Residents may no longer burn yard clippings, garbage, plastic, construction materials, rubber or any material that produces dense smoke.

Any property larger than 1-acre in size can apply for an open burn permit. Learn more online at GreshamOregon.gov/Outdoor-Burning
