Amazon unveils PSC2, the new Inbound Cross Dock facility in Pasco

PASCO, Wash. — The grand opening of Amazon’s new Inbound Cross Dock (IXD) facility in Pasco happened Wednesday morning. Amazon officials explained that a Cross Dock is essentially the fulfillment center to a fulfillment center.

There was a guided facility tour, exploring the state-of-the-art technology and processes that enhance distribution efficiency.

The Amazon PSC2 is located at 1351 S. Road 40th E. in Pasco. It’s around 120,000 sq. ft. and employs nearly 1,500 people. The center, which has been built for around two years now, is sat across the street from an unopened Amazon facility. Officials said Amazon has not yet decided what kind of center that one will be.

But this is more than just a new facility. It will also have major impacts on the community, in terms of economic development, and education.

Employees at the newly opened PSC2 have the option to further their education through Amazon’s Career Choice Program .

Site Lead Thomas Power explained that he was walking around the facility in the previous days, when he struck up a conversation with one of the employees. “He started talking about school, right? And then I asked him, ‘Hey, so have you taken advantage of Career Choice?’ He says, ‘Yes, sir, definitely.’ So, being only eight weeks old and having associates already into that was a, it's a big win for us. I don't have a number on the total, but I know people are actively taking advantage of Career Choice,” said Power.

Career Choice is an education benefit through Amazon that employees can take part in after 90 days employed. It’s a nation-wide program, but locally, Amazon has partnered with WSU Tri-Cities .

“Hopefully the Career Choice Program will bring students to the campus to further their education and help them along their career path, as we know people change careers all the time or they grow in their company, and we are so delighted to be part of their career path,” said WSU Tri-Cities Chancellor Sandra Haynes.

Career Choice provides tuition assistance to boost career advancement and personal growth. If employees want to upskill their career, Amazon-related or not, Power said the option to take part will at some point trickle down into the local economy.

City of Pasco Mayor Pete Serrano delivered remarks as well, and hopes this program will continue to expand.

“We want to build our internal workforce,” said Mayor Serrano. “We're going to pull from CBC and WSU, where we can, obviously, that's the decision of Amazon. But you know, again, there are great partnerships that are accessible, and hopefully, again, we'll just build it from the ground up.”

Chancellor Haynes said WSU Tri-Cities is thrilled to be a part of the career choice program for Amazon, and the first to do so in the area.

“We know that Amazon is dedicated to the education and training of all of its associates, and we are so pleased at WSU Tri-Cities to be the first local partner in their network,” said Chancellor Haynes.

The program not only impacts employees on a professional level, but also on the personal journey of higher education.
