Lai Ching-te is NOT speaking of TAIWAN independence, he is speaking of the sovereignty of the Republic of China on its 113th anniversary. It really irks the PRC that the ROC was never pounded into submission and has withstood 75 years defending Taiwan and other islands from the PLA. So, the PRC pretends the ROC is not there. Truth is, after WWII, the ROC was not severed. It was weakened from 14 years of Japanese intervention and war, but Taiwan was fully integrated with the Mainland. Then, the communist rebellion severed the Mainland from Taiwan which remained under ROC control.
