Solid country gold. Last night, Zach Top delivered an absolutely stellar cover of Keith Whitley's "Miami, My Amy" at the Von Braun Center Propst Arena in Huntsville, Alabama. It was part of a star-studded tribute concert for the great songwriter Dean Dillon called 'Songs and Stories of Dean Dillon,' who is one of the most legendary writers in country music. He has tons of credits on tons of songs for the likes of Toby Keith, Keith Whitley, Kenny Chesney, David Allan Coe (“Tennessee Whiskey,” if you’ve heard of it…), Brooks & Dunn, Alabama, and others, but is best known for his work with The King, George Strait. Of course, Whitley's fan-favorite song was originally written by Dean, along with Hank Cochran and Royce Porter. Keith included the song as the second single from his 1985 album
L.A. To Miami . Even though it only peaked at #14 on the U.S. Billboard Hot Country Singles & Tracks chart, it’s one of Keith’s all-time great songs. And Zach's vocals were absolutely flawless... he often gets compared to legends like Whitley and even Alan Jackson, and it's easy to hear why when you listen to him cover a song like this. Top was raised in Sunnyside, Washington, and grew up on classic country music around the family farm. With his siblings at the age of seven, he formed a band, and the rest, as they say, is history. Top is one of country music’s fastest-rising young stars, and I think he certainly did both Dillon and Whitley proud with this performance. I can't imagine it's easy to get up and sing such an iconic song for the legendary person who wrote it, but damn... this is something special:
