In a historic moment for Antigua and Barbuda, the twin-island nation celebrated the grand opening of the Barbuda International Airport (BIA) on October 3, 2024. The $14 million Barbuda International Airport offers direct global connections and a vastly improved travel experience for visitors and residents. With a 6,100-foot runway, more than triple the length of the previous Codrington Airport, the new facility accommodates larger aircraft, including private jets and planes like the Embraer E-170. The airport’s state-of-the-art LED runway lighting system allows for regular night landings, while a 600-foot parking apron can host multiple private jets. A modern Fixed Base Operator (FBO) terminal, developed by PLH (Peace, Love and Happiness), is designed to cater to high-end travelers seeking Barbuda’s famous pink sand beaches, tranquility, and exclusive experiences.

Speaking at the opening, Antigua and Barbuda’s Minister of Tourism, Civil Aviation, and Transportation, The Honourable Charles Fernandez, hailed the project as a transformative achievement for the island.

“This new Barbuda International Airport is a shining testament to the visionary leadership of our government,” Fernandez said in a press release. “We have taken bold steps to modernize this island, ensuring that its air links are second to none in this region so that Barbuda can also take advantage of the remarkable growth in our country’s tourism.”

Tourism to Antigua and Barbuda has been booming, with air arrivals growing by 17% in the first eight months of 2024 compared to the same period in 2023. Antigua and Barbuda welcomed 229,225 visitors during that period, representing a 13% growth compared to 2019, the destination’s best year on record for tourism arrivals.

The opening of the new airport aligns with Prime Minister Gaston Browne’s vision of making Barbuda a prosperous, sustainable, and flourishing community. “An international airport is a game changer for Barbuda,” said Antigua and Barbuda Tourism Authority CEO, Colin C. James, in a press release. “We look to attract luxury travelers and private jet owners from around the world to experience Barbuda’s beauty, eco-experiences, wellness attributes, and rich culture.”

The new airport will further bolster Barbuda’s tourism profile as the island prepares for its first-ever luxury cruise ship calls. Minister Fernandez announced that Barbuda would welcome 23 cruise ships and 5,039 cruise passengers during the upcoming winter season, bringing more visitors to enjoy the island’s pristine landscape and offerings.

Future expansion plans for the Barbuda International Airport, located just 10 minutes from Codrington village, have already been announced, reflecting the government’s commitment to further enhancing the island’s infrastructure and its appeal to the global luxury market.

Barbuda, a 62-square-mile coral island located 27 miles northeast of Antigua, is known for its unspoiled pink and white sand beaches, making it a serene paradise for nature lovers and adventure seekers. The island is home to just over 1,500 residents, most of whom live in the capital, Codrington. Visitors can enjoy snorkeling, birdwatching at the Frigate Bird Sanctuary, and exploring historic sites like Martello Tower, all within the backdrop of Barbuda’s tranquil landscape.
