One person died in a shooting involving Castle Rock police Wednesday night, the department confirmed to Denver7 Thursday morning.

No officers were injured, according to Castle Rock police, but an adult suspect was killed.

The incident started around 10:15 p.m. Wednesday, Castle Rock police said, near the intersection of Bilberry Street and Celestial Avenue. Police got a call reporting a man warmed with a stick had grabbed the caller's phone and broke it. He then left the scene, possibly armed with a shotgun, according to the caller.

When Castle Rock police arrived at the scene, the department said officers saw a man with a shotgun in his hand. He was allegedly breaking into an apartment complex leasing office and barricaded himself inside the building. Officers heard at least one shot fired from inside, according to Castle Rock PD.

Then the man left the building with the handgun, firing at officers. Castle Rock police shot back, hitting the man. They immediately tried to give medical aid to the man, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The officers involved in the shooting are now on paid administrative leave while Castle Rock Police Department reviews the shooting, per department policy, and the Critical Incident Response Team of the District Attorney's Office will also investigate.

The Douglas County Coroner's Office will release the identity of the man who was shot and killed.

Anyone with information on the shooting is asked to call the Castle Rock Police Department's tip line at 720-733-3517 or e-mail CrimeTips@CRgov.com.
