On paper, the value of 39-year-old Chris Paul joining the San Antonio Spurs might not be immediately evident. However, for those who watched his preseason debut against the Orlando Magic, it was apparent how he energized the younger players around him, seemingly assuming the role of the floor general.

Following the Spurs' epic comeback 10-point victory over the Orlando Magic - who are one of the most promising teams in the Eastern Conference - head coach Gregg Popovich was all praise for the 'Point God' and how he inspires all the other players.

Coach Pop on what CP3 means to the Spurs

Since leaving the star-studded Houston Rockets in 2019, Paul has consistently played for teams with young franchise cornerstones. His veteran leadership helped the OKC Thunder reach the playoffs with a 44-28 record. Most importantly, his influence was key for Shai Gilegous Alexander to improve his scoring average from 10.8 points per game to 19.0 points per game in a single year's time. Similarly, upon joining the Phoenix Suns, he played a huge role in guiding the team to the NBA Finals by encouraging players like Mikal Bridges and Deandre Ayton to improve their efficiency while also helping Devin Booker develop into a more mature leader.

In a similar vein, CP3, in his debut for the San Antonio Spurs , might have only scored five points, three assists, and two steals in 23 minutes. But his bigger impact could have been sensed in how he instructed players to open the floor, create mismatches, and dictate the pace of the game.

Consequently, after the game, Popovich praised the 11-time All-Star for how he handled himself in front of the younger players—leading by example.

"He's so wise, and he's got so much experience ," Pop said. "Sometimes I get mesmerized listening to him just say things to players."

Victor Wembanyama was also all praise for CP3

Toward the end of the first quarter, Paul had a standout moment with Spurs marquee star Victor Wembanyama. The two combined for a remarkable play, showcasing their potential to dominate defenses through pick-and-roll situations.

So when the Frenchman was asked about his experience of sharing the court with one of the most experienced point guards in the league, the reigning ROY emphasized just how much he is impressed by Paul's ability to control the pace of the game even at such a late stage in his career.

It's safe to say that with Paul entering the final stage of his career, the expectation from him is not to average points in double digits or lead the league in any category but to inspire the young core of the team to such a vibrant extent that they are able to reach the playoffs for the first time in six years.
