Experts weigh in: Are Crocs hurting kids’ feet?

Crocs are everywhere, though the squishy, colorful, slip-on shoes sometimes create intense debate amongst supporters and detractors. The shoes have become a wardrobe staple for kids, teens and even parents over the years.

But are Crocs actually good for developing feet ? NPR recently spoke to Maryland podiatrist Priya Parthasarathy, who is also the spokesperson for the American Podiatric Medical Association .

As a mother of three, Parthasarathy likes how convenient Crocs can be, especially when getting out of the house quickly or heading to the pool. As a doctor, she's concerned about her kids wearing the shoes all day. She says she's seeing more and more foot issues.

According to her, the lack of stability and poor arch support can cause issues over time. The shoes also don't wick away moisture well, so the kids can get blisters.

Crocs issued a statement to NPR, saying that its shoes are designed for everyday wear, and the company is not aware of any substantiated health issues tied to the shoes. Meanwhile, it's not the only claim Crocs have had to combat in recent months

The company faces several legal challenges . A California federal judge recently rejected Crocs' attempt to dismiss four class action claims against the company. The U.S. district judge ruled that allegations claiming Crocs shrink after being used in the types of environments shown in ads has merit.

That legal battle has yet to be completed, so more legal issues with the shoes could be forthcoming.
