The Minnesota Vikings discussed a contract extension with safety Camryn Bynum this offseason but weren't able to reach an agreement.

It raised questions on if the Vikings were interested in bringing back Bynum on a larger contract because of the nature of the safety market. With Bynum continuing his stellar performance this season, ESPN's Jeremy Fowler believes they could come to an extension this season.

A Camryn Bynum extension could be coming

I'll go with Vikings safety Camryn Bynum. Minnesota and Bynum discussed an extension in recent months but couldn't reach an agreement. As of now, he is set to enter free agency. He's thriving in Brian Flores' defense, with two interceptions, five pass deflections and a fumble recovery. Making splash plays in a contract year is a way to nudge the team back to the negotiation table with a stronger offense. That could be the case here. Bynum also fortifies a clear position of need in the future. Harrison Smith is turning 36 in February. The Vikings released 2022 first-rounder Lewis Cine in August. Bynum has leverage and could wait until March to exercise it.

Bynum has been a key cog this season in the defense's success. He has two interceptions this season and has been consistently around the ball. The other key piece in the Stefon Diggs trade, Bynum's intelligence has been so crucial in allowing the defense to operate at a high level.

Just before the season, I gave a prediction for a Bynum extension.

Bynum is one of the big wins from the 2021 NFL Draft and the last piece to the Stefon Diggs trade. It also could make sense to want to wait it out. Young safeties have been getting paid while veterans have had to wait for contracts. Xavier McKinney just got a deal valued at over $17 million and Bynum might think he can get close to that. If the Vikings can get a deal done, it would be a huge benefit for them.

Predicted extension : 3 years, $36 million, $20.5 million guaranteed

That would be a big win for the Vikings to keep Bynum for the long-term but would they be willing to make that kind of commitment? Time will tell, but it wouldn't be shocking if it happens.
