Dr. Dre Hit with $10M Lawsuit by Divorce Therapist Claiming Harassment

Dr. Dre is facing a $10 million lawsuit filed by psychotherapist Dr. Charles Sophy, who alleges “unbearable harassment” by the rapper. According to Rolling Stone , Dre launched a “systematic and malicious” campaign against Sophy, leaving the doctor in fear for his life and forcing him to wear a bulletproof vest.

Sophy claims he was hired by Dre, born Andre Young, in 2018 to mediate the rapper’s divorce from his now ex-wife, Nicole Young. He says he worked diligently and fairly, but after the couple reached a settlement in 2021, communication with Dre stopped. However, in early 2023, Dre allegedly started sending a series of late-night, threatening texts, accusing Sophy of improper conduct during the mediation. The lawsuit describes the messages as part of a nearly year-long campaign of harassment, including threats of violence and homophobic slurs.

One text from Dre reportedly read, “What happened Doc? I thought you wanted to talk. Cat got your tongue? You’re going to have to give me a written apology. If not, I’m moving forward. I’m not playing, trust me.” Another disturbing message in August 2023 allegedly stated, “Don’t worry, I haven’t forgotten about you,” which left Sophy fearing for his life.

Sophy also claims Dre tried to pressure him into unlawfully disclosing confidential information from a therapy session with a third party, which Sophy refused. After Dre’s initial texts in February 2023, Sophy says people claiming to be FBI agents tried to gain access to his home, escalating his fear.

The lawsuit details that Sophy now lives in constant fear, wearing a bulletproof vest whenever he leaves his home and constantly looking over his shoulder. The lawsuit seeks at least $10 million in compensatory damages, along with punitive damages.

Dre’s lawyer, Howard King, has responded, accusing Sophy of incompetence and alleging that the psychotherapist improperly inserted himself into the Young family’s contentious divorce. King claims Dre had filed a complaint against Sophy with the Osteopathic Medical Board of California, seeking to revoke his license for alleged misconduct.

The legal battle continues, with Sophy’s lawsuit calling for protection from Dre’s alleged harassment and threats.
