Disney gives first look at Star Wars’ new transgender Clone trooper

Disney's Star Wars fans got a first look at a new Clone trooper.

The franchise announced its first ever transgender Clone trooper named Sister. She was originally introduced in the 2022 novel, Queen's Hope, with very little detail about the character. The narrative of Sister goes into her distinct gender identity, which she believed she needed to hide. She was welcomed by others in the seventh Sky Corps, who gave her the nickname Sister as a sign of acceptance.

The Secrets of the Clone Troopers is a new book that was released this year and it included a new look at Sister. Clone Captain Rex described her in the book as: "When one of our kind expressed her gender identity differently than her fellow troopers, she featured she’d have to hide who she truly was inside."

Rex continued: "Fortunately, her brothers in the 7th Sky Corps gave her the name Sister as a constant reminder that she belonged."

Many were upset with the reveal as many expressed their disappointment with the franchise. One person on X, formerly known as Twitter, wrote: "What happened to the franchise I love." Another user added: "She literally has the trans flag on her amor... The transgender flag... this is supposed to be a galaxy far away, not down town California. A third user posted: "This can't be real. Gotta be a parody... there is no freaking way!" A fourth chimed in. "And they wonder why Star Wars projects keep failing."

Despite the negative feedback, others were happy and loved the idea of Sister joining the franchise. Someone penned: "That’s pretty damn cool!" One user interjected: "I love this! More diversity in the clones and representation through each of them trying to make their existence more than just being a killing machine for the republic." A third wrote: "Not surprising since every clone was encouraged to express their individuality, interesting and good addition, too bad this wasn’t an earlier thought."

Sister's experiences and other Clone troopers will be explored in The Secrets of the Clone Troopers, which will add more diverse and intimate tales to the Star Wars world.
