John Mulaney is returning to Netflix after the success of his short-lived variety show Everybody’s in L.A. to host a brand new live talk show.

Netflix’s Chief Content Officer Bela Bajaria announced the news at the Bloomberg Screentime conference, per Deadline .

Bajaria noted the streamer has enjoyed a “long relationship” with Mulaney, which spawned the “bold, original and fresh” variety talk show Mulaney created as part of the Netflix is a Joke festival earlier this year.

“I think it’ll be really fun to get to do a live show,” Bajaria said. “I’m excited about pushing into another area.”

According to Variety , the show is set to premiere in early 2025.

Though there are still few details available about the project, the new series will be produced by Mulaney’s Multiple Camera Productions. Mulaney will also serve as a co-showrunner.

Mulaney has expressed interest in hosting a talk show before. But he made it known on Everybody’s In L.A. that he liked that his show had a definitive end date.

“No matter what happens this week, we’re done May 10th,” he said in one episode. “Which is awesome. Because there is nothing I like being more than done .”

The chaotic talk show featured appearances from countless comedians and stars, including Jerry Seinfeld , Will Ferrell , Jon Stewart , Nate Bargatze , Sarah Silverman , Tom Seguara , Bill Hader , and a special performance from Weezer. A hypnotherapist also made an appearance on the show.

Mulaney said he went into the project with the intention of making it a variety show. “I wanted everyone to go make what they wanted and I will put it on. We can’t get renewed. We should actually be a variety show,” he told Deadline back in June.

“I liked that it was an assignment and that it had a start date and an end date like a summer job. I really liked the idea of that you can make it whatever you want,” he added.

During her appearance at the Bloomberg Screentime conference, Bajaria noted that the viewership for the special wasn’t “huge.” But the special’s rave reviews from critics certainly prove Mulaney has the chops to become a talk show host.

Though Netflix has not seen much success in the talk show space with cancelled programs from both Hasan Minhaj and Chelsea Handler , Bajaria said the streamer is willing to continue taking risks to see what works.

“Now, if we build a weekly live talk/variety, what does that look like?” she said, per Variety . “I think the live will be interesting to see. Also, he’s just wildly talented and really creative.”

She continued, “I think we have to continue to be bold and take risks and swings. And I think it would be too easy and too safe to go, ‘oh, well, talk hasn’t worked, so let’s not try this thing.’”
