A 95-year-old World War II veteran is sharing tips on how he stays fit and healthy , nearly 80 years after he joined the U.S. Army at 17 years old in 1945; just one day before the global conflict concluded.

Speaking with Fox News Digital , David Scott, from Dover, NH, said that he works out at his local Planet Fitness several times a week to keep active, even at his advanced age. Scott heads to the gym every other day, where he undertakes a 30-minute, full-body workout using machines to target his shoulders, legs, and stomach.

"It makes me feel good. Like I’m in control of my body and my muscles understand that I’m in control," he explained of his routine, offering the advice to younger people to try to get in some physical activity at least three times per week. "You’ll feel better if you do it. It helps your balance as well as your muscle tone."

But staying physically active isn't the only secret to Scott's longevity. He also credits his 62-year marriage to his wife, Olympic-qualifying Italian skier Lydia Vergani, whom he met on a ski trip to Milan in 1961. The match was love at first sight and the pair were engaged two weeks later, when Scott was 33 and Vergani was 24. They married the following year and have been going strong ever since.

"She was very friendly. She was very athletic," he recalled, noting that they have stayed active over the years by walking and hiking. Vergani added: "We had so much in common. A love for opera and adventure."

Following his military career, Scott used his G.I. Bill benefits to attend Harvard University, where he majored in philosophy and joined the Ivy League school's wrestling team. "I wrestled the captains of the Princeton team and the Yale team," he remembered. "I lost both, but I had the Yale captain in a pinning hold … He won just by an inch."

While Scott has clearly been active his entire life, it's never too late to kickstart a fitness routine. As we age, building muscle is crucial for not just maintaining muscle mass, but improving mobility and reducing many common health risks associated with aging.
