Mark Cuban Slept In a 'Nasty' Dallas Apartment Before Riches

Dallas Mavericks minority owner Mark Cuban once slept in a "nasty" Dallas apartment before achieving his rags-to-riches story. Cuban, 66, is one of the wealthiest people in the United States with a net worth of $5.7 billion, according to Forbes. However, Cuban's business journey wasn't easy, as he was from a middle-class family in Mount Lebanon, a suburb of Pittsburgh.

Cuban's initial late nights of teaching himself how to code and eating chicken wings eventually paid off. Cuban earned his fortune with a series of business deals starting in the 1990s, such as the sale of his streaming site Broadcast.com for $5.7 billion in stocks. Read on for further details surrounding Cuban's early career.

Mark Cuban Arrives In Dallas For Non-Business Reason

In 1982, Mark Cuban arrived in Dallas but for a non-business reason. After graduating from Indiana University Bloomington, Cuban moved to Dallas because a friend told him that the city was full of beautiful women. He ultimately married advertising executive Tiffany Stewart in Barbados in 2002 after first meeting her in a Dallas gym in 1997, but he was already successful as a businessman.

The Cuban family, which includes the couple's three children Alexis, Alyssa, and Jake, live in a 24,000-square-foot mansion in the Preston Hollow neighborhood of Dallas. Cuban also owns a six-bedroom, contemporary beach house in Laguna Beach, California. In addition, Cuban owns a Gulfstream G550 and a Boeing 757-200.

Cuban's Subpar Living Arrangements In Dallas

Mark Cuban sat down for a conversation with The San Francisco Standard's "Life in Seven Songs" podcast this week. Cuban revealed his subpar living arrangements in his early days in Dallas. Cuban told The San Francisco Standard, "I slept on the floor. If someone was out of town, I got a bed ... I didn't have my own closet, didn't have my own drawers, nothing."

Mark Cuban moved to Dallas at the request of a friend, who promised him "great weather" and "scores of beautiful women" compared to his counterparts in Pittsburgh and Bloomington, Indiana. Cuban recalled to The San Francisco Standard, "The women are beautiful? Here I come. I'm 24 years old."

    Cuban Ultimately Achieves Success

Mark Cuban's stint in Dallas was initially meant to be a short-term stopover. However, Cuban's first job as a software salesman led to other opportunities in Dallas. Cuban's first job was short-lived because his then-boss allegedly fired him after giving him a chance to make a $15,000 sale and earn a $1,500 commission.

Mark Cuban's setback led to positives. Cuban started MicroSolutions, a systems integrator and software reseller, in 1983. MicroSolutions' revenue growth grew to over $30 million in less than a decade. He sold the company in 1990 for $6 million and became a millionaire at 32 years old.

After selling the company, Cuban said that he "made a lot of money" and bought an American Airlines lifetime pass to travel and party. Cuban told The San Francisco Standard, "I was young, single, and crazy, and there were no limits ... I just wanted to have a beer with as many people as I possibly could, experience as many things as I possibly could." Cuban later became a billionaire and a now-former "Shark Tank" star after a 13-year run. Cuban's top three deals on the business reality TV show were his $1 million-plus investments in Ten Thirty One Productions, Rugged Maniac Obstacle Race, and BeatBox Beverages.
