Roger Federer couldn't have chosen a more fitting word to describe Rafael Nadal's career after the Spanish tennis sensation announced his retirement on Thursday.

Nadal is hanging up the racket for good after an incredible professional tennis career that spanned 23 years. Throughout that time, he has garnered 22 Grand Slam championships, as well as 36 Masters 1000 titles.

The 38-year-old Nadal has been hailed as the King of Clay, thanks to his dominance in the French Open where he won 14 Grand Slams.

Unfortunately, injuries have hindered Nadal, especially in the last two years. He missed a huge chunk of the 2023 season due to a hip injury, and while he's hoping for a big comeback in 2024, he has been limited by other ailments.

"I’m here to let you know that I am retiring from professional tennis," Nadal said in Spanish to announce his decision. "The reality is that it has been some difficult years, these last two especially. I don’t think I have been able to play without limitations. It is obviously a difficult decision, one that has taken me some time to make."

After seeing Nadal's retirement announcement, Federer made sure to give the tennis legend the respect he deserves. Both players were fierce rivals when they were still active together, but throughout the years, the rivalry has transformed into respect and friendship.

In a post on his Instagram Stories , Federer described Nadal's career as "iconic."

"CONGRATS RAFA ON AN ICONIC CAREER," Federer wrote along with a photo of them during their playing days.

For what it's worth, Roger Federer also reacted to Rafael Nadal's retirement announcement earlier in the day and sent a heartfelt message to his good friend.

“What a career, Rafa!” Federer wrote on Nadal’s Instagram post. "I always hoped this day would never come. Thank you for the unforgettable memories and all your incredible achievements in the game we love. It’s been an absolute honor!"

Nadal has been really vocal about his incredible relationship with Federer before, so it's not surprising why the latter was a bit emotional about seeing the Spanish icon call it a career.

Rafa is set to play in his last tournament at the Davis Cup finals in November. Perhaps fans will see Federer attend the competition to bid farewell to his good friend.
