(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Working to enhance the overall customer experience, the Chicago Transit Authority is placing digital bus stop signs at a small number of locations this winter.

The signs will feature real time bus arrival information and other service info, such as delays and reroutes. The signs will also be equipped with a text to speech function, allowing riders to push a button and hear what the sign says.

During the digital bus stop sign pilot, two contracted vendors will test differences in display sizes, power supply methods, and text-to-speech buttons. Additionally, unique back-end applications for managing content on the digital signs will be tested.

The vendors Global Display Solutions and Papercast were each awarded a project stipend of $55,000. Global Display Solutions has global expertise in large outdoor displays. Papercast is a supplier of solar and battery powered displays and software to support information on signs.

Residents will also be provided with the opportunity to provide feedback in the process.

More information about where and when the signs will be implemented will be released at a later date.
