(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — One man who used to run the Chicago Public Schools says he believes it is time to let the State Government step into the turmoil to right the ship.

Paul Vallas, who was a mayoral candidate, was also a Public Schools CEO here. He said Governor Pritzker should revive the old School Finance Authority  to oversee needed financial actions for the school district.

Vallas also suggests cutting some central office non-teacher staff positions.

Mayor Johnson has bristled at suggestions that the city moving towards an elected school board he fought for should give up any local control. But he has not ruled out layoffs.

Vallas remembers 1995, when he was in charge. He says he "radically decentralized" the staff.

Currently, he says, CPS has more non-teachers on the payroll than teachers and the mayor wants to add more staff. He suggests more responsible actions are needed.
