The reimagined Riverfront Commons, a 20-mile world-class active destination along the Ohio River connecting Northern Kentucky, was officially unveiled during a community celebration on Thursday hosted by Southbank Partners, a regional economic development organization in Northern Kentucky.

Local officials from each Southbank city, leaders and community partners gathered at Covington Plaza to learn about the future of this regional project and the improvements in the public spaces that feature breathtaking views, diverse cultural experiences, and endless outdoor adventures.

Attendees learned about the projects currently underway at Riverfront Commons and heard about its long-term vision and regional impact—benefiting residents, businesses, and visitors alike. The event featured a status update on the riverwalk, project renderings, concept designs, the reveal of a new brand, a video premiere, and exclusive limited-edition merchandise.

“Riverfront Commons will help create an unbridled destination for every season of life in our community. One of the main attractions is The Riverwalk- an active transportation system for the urban lifestyle– 20 miles will connect 8 cities into 1 community, spurring economic growth and attracting top talent to the region. By linking these communities, the riverwalk serves as a vital asset for daily commuting and a welcoming third place for all walks of life. The Riverwalk will also feature interactive art pieces that showcase our vibrant community,” said Will Weber, President & CEO of Southbank Partners.

The next signature art piece along the Riverwalk was revealed, following the Love the Cov piece in Covington earlier this year. The next piece will be in the City of Dayton, at the intersection of Manhattan Blvd and Berry Street. The piece will feature – a life size replica of the John Hastings ferry boat in the City of Dayton designed by local artist Cam Miller.

The John Hasting ferry boat was the first business in the City of Dayton and would take the laborers from Dayton to Cincinnati to work at the Fulton Steamboat Co. This art installation will feature an operating paddle wheel, tall stacks, and an overlook with a captain’s wheel. We are very excited to work with the City of Dayton, Dayton History Museum, and community partners to fund the construction of this exciting new piece before America’s River Roots next year.

At the heart of the celebration was the unveiling of the new Riverfront Commons brand, which reflects the dynamic spirit of Northern Kentucky. With the tagline “The Front Porch of the South”, the brand emphasizes the connection between communities, where every person from every walk of life is invited to connect and explore.

“Relocating CTI’s Global Headquarters to RiverCenter seven years ago has been instrumental in attracting and retaining the region’s most talented professionals,” said Timothy Schroeder, Chairman & CEO of CTI. “This strategic move has empowered our team to advance medicine globally, profoundly impacting countless lives.

Schroeder continued, “We recognize this decision as a pivotal moment in our journey to deliver life-changing therapies to patients worldwide. It’s inspiring to be a part of the region’s growth through projects like the OneNKY Center with Covington Life Sciences Center and Riverfront Commons.”

“We’re proud that CTI has played a role in reimagining and revitalizing this region, contributing to its growth as a hub for medical innovation.”

Guests were excited to take home limited-edition custom merchandise, commemorating the milestone event and showcasing the new brand. Attendees also enjoyed getting a firsthand look at what the wayfinding signage, art installations, and improved pathways could look like through various renderings.

“Riverfront Commons is a shining example of how Northern Kentucky is enhancing its natural beauty and accessibility for residents and visitors alike. The Riverwalk will not only connect our vibrant riverfront communities but also serves as a key asset in driving tourism, offering outdoor recreation and unforgettable experiences along the Ohio River,” said Julie Kirkpatrick, President & CEO of meetNKY.

Southbank Partners shared updates on four key projects along the riverfront, underscoring Riverfront Commons’ commitment to creating a connected, vibrant region.

These projects would not be possible without the generous support of St. Elizabeth Healthcare, RC Durr Foundation, meetNKY, and the Commonwealth of Kentucky.

Vital funding was also provided through the efforts of Kentucky State Senator Chris McDaniel who secured $2.5 million for Southbank in the state’s 2022 budget.

These projects are at various stages of development:

    • Newport – Port of Entry (Dave Cowens Drive and Riverboat Row): This 1-mile section was recently enhanced along Riverboat Row and Dave Cowens with upgraded pathways and scenic views. Painting, signage, lighting, landscaping, and new fencing. Completed.

    • Ludlow – Phase 2: Ludlow Memorial Park (Adela Ave. to Hooper St.): This .25-mile extension in Ludlow features a community-centric space, offering more opportunities for recreation and gathering. Completion Expected: Fall 2024/Spring 2025.

    • Silver Grove – Phase 1: 4-Mile Trailhead (Mary Ingles Highway): The .25-mile addition integrates Silver Grove’s historical character with outdoor amenities. Completion Expected: Summer 2025

    • Dayton – Berry Street Connection (Berry Street and Manhattan Harbour Blvd): This .1-mile connection will provide seamless access between the riverfront and the Historic Downtown Business District, enhancing mobility throughout the city. Completion Expected: Spring 2025.

Throughout the project’s development, Southbank Partners has worked closely with partners and stakeholders, securing funding from public and private sources to make this ambitious vision a reality. These projects would not be possible without the generous support of St. Elizabeth Healthcare, RC Durr Foundation, meetNKY, and the Commonwealth of Kentucky.

“This event signals a bright future for NKY – with five miles completed, three miles funded for construction, and the remaining 12 miles funded for design/ engineering”, added Weber.

“Riverfront Commons will enhance the quality of life for both residents and visitors for years to come.”

Southbank Partners encourages people to continue exploring and supporting the ongoing development of Riverfront Commons. With many exciting projects on the horizon, it is set to be a key asset in the region.
