Peoria Javelinas Padres AFL update: October 10 (De Vries debuts)

The Peoria Javelinas’ season continued in the Arizona Fall League on Thursday, and six members of the Padres’ organization were involved.

A staggering six players from the Padres organization saw action in the Peoria Javelinas’ 13-6 loss in Glendale on Thursday. Padres No. 25 prospect Ryan Bergert started for Peoria but immediately ran into trouble, allowing three hits and two runs in the first inning. After Peoria drew to within one run, the Javelinas pitching staff imploded in the second inning.

Bergert allowed a third run on a missed catch error, and after walking the bases loaded, he was relieved by 2024 Missions teammate David Morgan. Morgan did not exit the frame unscathed, as he uncorked a wild pitch to score Edwin Arroyo to extend the Desert Dogs’ lead to 4-1. If only it ended there. It unfortunately did not, as Christian Encarnacion-Strand singled in two more, and Zyhir Hope capped off the frame with a two-run home run to score the seventh run of the inning. Harry Gustin also appeared in the game, allowing two runs in 1.1 innings, striking out three.

One-third of the Javelinas’ lineup consisted of Padres prospects. Leodalis De Vries and Ethan Salas batted back-to-back in the lineup. De Vries reached base once via the walk, with two strikeouts. De Vries batted as the DH in the game, as he is still coming off a shoulder injury sustained while fielding near the tail end of the minor league season.

Ethan Salas reached base twice in the game, showcasing his strong eye at the plate. Salas singled and walked in the game, putting good wood on the baseball in two of his four at-bats. Romeo Sanabria made the start at first base and reached base three times, doubling in one of his plate appearances. Sanabria has continued to barrel up the baseball in his two games in the AFL, and seeing the batted ball data puts into perspective why the slugger broke out this season.

No Padres prospects played on Wednesday evening, and the Javelinas return to action on Friday against the Mesa Solar Sox.
