Penn State football is in Los Angeles ahead of Saturday’s meeting with USC . How will the Lions spend their time there on Friday? Today’s newsstand covers that, headlines of the day, and more. Let’s dive in one day before the team looks to improve to 6-0 on the year.

Penn State touched down at LAX just before 5 p.m. PT on Thursday. The flight out of Harrisburg International Airport took about five hours. Today, the team will hold its ‘Fast Friday’ practice at SoFi Stadium, which is home to the NFL’s Los Angeles Rams and Chargers. Head coach James Franklin explained the team’s practice schedule, which has been in place for a few years, during an August edition of the Penn State Coaches Show.

“All we really did was embrace the model that Cael [Sanderson] , the wrestlers, the Olympic programs have been doing forever,” Franklin said. “And I love it. I think it makes sense. I think the big value in it is we used to practice hard Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, then walk through on Friday like it’s been going on forever in football high school or college, and then play the game on Saturday. And the recovery the day before the game seemed to make sense.

“The problem with that is your Thursday practice, you are pulling it out of them because it’s three days in a row. So doing it this way, it allows you to get Tuesday and Wednesday really good practices. They know they have a jog through kind of more of a mental day on Thursday, and pick it back up and go full speed Friday. And I think it just makes a ton of sense. The coordinators have really embraced it, and our players have embraced it. I wouldn’t go back.”

Besides overseeing practice and final meetings, Franklin will also take advantage of the road trip by going to recruit out west in the morning and evening.

“We’re going to handle this Friday like we’ve been handling all these other Fridays,” Franklin said. “I’ll typically go out in the morning and then get back with the team, and then go back out again at night. So, we’ll treat it just like we’ve been doing up to this point.”

    Quote of the day

“It’s two of the better backs we’re going to play all year. They run hard. They’re downhill. But they also have the ability to score at any point in time. They make plays out of the backfield in the passing game. Any time you have backs that can do as much as their backs do, it’s tough on a defense.”
