49ers can't catch a break as key starter's replacement leaves Seahawks game with injury

The San Francisco 49ers are currently luckless in their kicker problem after Jake Moody’s replacement could also now be facing a spell on the sidelines.

Moody suffered an ankle sprain in the defeat against the Arizona Cardinals last Sunday and the franchise wasted no time in making their decision on his cover for week six against the Seattle Seahawks , and what they presumed would be for the immediate future as Moody recovers on the sideline.

However, NFL journeyman Matthew Wright, returning to San Francisco for his second spell with the team, having joined up with the practice squad in September last year, suffered an injury against the Seahawks.

As per NFL reporter Farzin Vousoughian, Wright sustained the injury while tackling a kick returner, and if his problem is serious, then the 49ers will be forced into playing a third kicker of the season in the game against the Kansas City Chiefs next Sunday.

Wright has kicked for four different teams over five years since he made his NFL debut in 2020. Going undrafted in 2019, Wright has trained with a catalog of NFL sides, kicking for four different teams prior to returning to California, and spending time on eight different team’s practice squads. The 28-year-old signed a one-year deal with the 49ers, who will be hoping his injury won’t leave him missing any action, with the Chiefs game still over a week away.

Despite the injury headache, the 49ers returned to winning ways with a 36-24 victory to even their stuttering record this season to 3-3. San Francisco led 16-3 at half-time and after weathering a fight-back from Seattle in the third quarter, as the hosts took the quarter 14-7, the 49ers eased over the line with a six-point lead in the fourth quarter.

Wright put San Francisco on the scoreboard first with four minutes left on the clock in the opening quarter with a 25-yard field goal -his first kick as a 49er. Wright went three-for-three on his kicking.

Alongside the injury problems regarding their kickers, Kyle Shanahan has also been left sweating over Jordan Mason’s condition after he was forced to withdraw from the action following a second-quarter blow.

“Yeah, he thought he was gonna be alright,” Shanahan mentioned post-game. “He went back in [the game] and it just hurt him too much, so he went out. I think that was the first play, and then he was out just in case of emergency.”

Next up for the 49ers is the visit of one of only two unbeaten sides in the league, as the back-to-back Super Bowl-winning Chiefs roll into town. San Francisco’s victory over their NFC West rivals saw them leapfrog the Seahawks to top the group before the Cardinals are in action against the Los Angeles Chargers on Monday.
