Hollywood director claims the late Robin Williams ‘sabotaged’ his comedy career

It's not easy to break into the stand-up comedy scene, and according to director Paul Feig, the late Robin Williams made it worse.

He explained that Robin would "sabotage" his sets sometimes, which made it difficult for Paul to attract crowds. On the Dinner's On Me podcast, Paul told a story that had happened at The Improv : “I still wasn’t one of the main guys so I’d have a later spot. I remember like, once it was my time to get up, there was a full audience and I was so excited and they come up like, ‘Oh, Robin just wants to get up and do a quick set first’ and I’m like, ‘cool.’”

"He did an hour and he finished and everybody left except for one woman who was waiting for her husband to come back from the bathroom," Paul concluded.

The Bridesmaids director explained that he tried to keep his cool when this all went down as he didn't want to cause any problems. He explained that The Comedy Store and The Improv, where this particular incident took place, had comedians "held hostage." If they wanted to perform on these notorious stages, entertainers needed to "stay in their good graces, to impress them." Part of this was being particularly picky about when to raise concerns, something that Paul had in mind when deciding how to handle Robin's intrusion.

He went on to explain that he dropped from the comedy scene, but it wasn't all because of Robin's intrusions. He also found that he was losing his passion and wanted to bow out before becoming the "miserable" person in comedy. Now, Paul has turned his attention toward a more behind-the-scenes role in the entertainment industry.

He's known for directing projects like 2016's Ghostbusters and 2011's Bridesmaids. With his past in comedy, he's able to take lead on more comedic storylines, but doesn't limit himself. He took a stab at The School for Good and Evil, but was uncertain given his lack of experience in the more whimsical genre.

“Truth be told, this is not my genre, fantasy and that kind of stuff,” Paul said, according to IGN . “So, when I was first told about it, I was like, ‘It doesn't sound like it's for me.’ But then I read the script and I absolutely fell in love with the characters and the story and the world that I could create, and that was really what it was."
