Out of sympathy for the cartoon kid, fans mailed lots of candy to Charles M. Schulz’s studio in California. The 1922-born creator fulfilled his dream of being a globally recognized cartoonist with the Peanuts series after his first attempt with Li’l Folks put him on the map locally.

Charlie Brown was an immediate hit

After years of making comic strips about children who acted like adults, Schulz made his onscreen debut in the Peanut series with A Charlie Brown Christmas, which was an instant success, with over 15 million households watching the premiere.

Its success birthed more shows, including A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving and It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown, which have maintained their rewatch value through generations. After making wholesome creations for most of his life, Schulz died of a heart attack in his sleep at 77.
