Multiple construction projects across key routes in Morris County and neighboring areas are expected to cause delays until late afternoon.

MORRIS COUNTY, NJ — Commuters traveling through northern New Jersey today should be prepared for significant traffic delays due to ongoing construction work across several major highways, including Route 23, Route 53, U.S. Route 46, I-80, and I-287. As of 9:00 a.m. this morning, lane closures and shoulder shifts have been implemented in multiple locations, with work expected to continue until the late afternoon.

    Key construction activities include:

    • Route 23 Northbound (Butler to West Milford Township): A right lane is closed from Maple Lake Road to north of Paterson Hamburg Turnpike until 1:00 p.m. Commuters should expect moderate delays through the area.
    • Route 53 Northbound (Morris Plains): Construction on Route 53 northbound, north of U.S. Route 202, has closed the right shoulder until 3:00 p.m., while in a nearby section, all lanes are intermittently closed until 3:00 p.m.
    • U.S. Route 46 (Parsippany-Troy Hills and Mountain Lakes): Multiple sections of U.S. 46 in both directions are affected, with lane closures and shoulder restrictions between Mountain Lakes Boulevard and Cherry Hill Road. One right lane and one left lane remain closed at different points along the route, extending west to I-287. The work is expected to last until 3:00 p.m.
    • I-80 (Rockaway Township and Parsippany-Troy Hills): Construction on I-80 in both eastbound and westbound directions has resulted in shoulder closures near exits 34 and 37 in Rockaway Township. Additionally, work continues near Exit 39 (NJ 53) and Exit 42 (US 202/Littleton Road) in Parsippany-Troy Hills Township, with right shoulder closures extending until 3:00 p.m.
    • I-287 Northbound (Harding Township): Construction between Exit 30 (North Maple Avenue) and Exit 33 (Harter Road/US 202) has closed the right shoulder until 3:00 p.m.

Motorists are advised to plan alternative routes and allow for extra travel time throughout the day. With lane closures, shoulder shifts, and intermittent traffic stoppages, these construction projects are expected to significantly impact traffic flow across the region. For up-to-date information on road conditions, travelers can visit the NJ Department of Transportation website or use real-time traffic apps.

For local residents and businesses, the construction underscores ongoing infrastructure improvements, but it also brings temporary inconvenience for those traveling through some of the region's most heavily trafficked corridors. As always, drivers are encouraged to stay patient and cautious when navigating these construction zones.
