After experiencing difficulty moving around, Academy Award-winning actress Kathy Bates began her weight loss journey and has lost 100 pounds over a space of seven years. However, rumors have spread that she used Ozempic—a drug commonly used for diabetes and obesity, to lose weight.

To address the controversies surrounding how she achieved her new size, Kathy recently set the record straight, saying that her weight loss was as a result of hard work, physically and mentally and a changed diet.

Kathy Bates on exactly how she lost the weight

Although the 76-year-old actress admitted that she used Ozempic, she claimed she had already lost 80 pounds before using it, and she lost an extra 20 pounds after she started using it. There’s been a lot of talk that I was just able to do this because of Ozempic,” she said, “But I have to impress upon people out there that this was hard work for me, especially during the pandemic.”

Bates was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes in 2017, which scared her. It encouraged her to focus on her health and that’s when her weight loss journey started. The actress confessed that before her diabetes diagnosis, she used to eat terribly “burgers, coke, and pizza.” She also mentioned that she ate a lot and had bad eating habits because she was afraid, and it was a “FU to her self-esteem.”

Bates revealed that she first changed her diet and switched to healthier meals, and she also stopped eating after 8pm. But she admits that once in a while she still eats some of these foods. She also mentioned exercises helped her a lot and she has a workout routine. “I have a treadmill here at the house, and I might try Pilates.” She added, “It’s just very important to me to keep this going. I don’t want to slip.”

Bates admitted that prioritizing her health was a good decision as she has seen so many benefits of her weight loss, including helping with her lymphedema symptoms, a condition that causes swelling in the body.
