Perhaps few outside the Waunakee Boys Varsity Soccer team thought that they could hang with state power Madison East, but the Warriors matched the 4th-ranked (Wisconsin Soccer Coaches Association poll) Purgolders to a 0-0 tie at the Pitch Thursday night. Deploying a defensive-minded approach, Waunakee shut down Madison East’s offense.

“We watched East on film and knew how good they were. The plan was to play a 4-5-1 and not pressure the ball and play counter attack. All of the boys did their job superbly and I couldn't be prouder. They were disciplined in their job and their communication was superb, “ said head coach Mike Baldwin.

East outshot Waunakee 10-to-1. Warrior goalkeepers Keaton Porter and Quinn Miller shared in the shutout.

Waunakee is now 2-8-4 and will host DeForest Tuesday on Senior Night.
