Florida - The Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) has announced the discontinuation of Emergency Shoulder Use (ESU) on interstate highways across the state, effective as of Wednesday, October 9th. In a recent statement, FHP officials emphasized that interstate shoulders are now exclusively designated for emergency stops. This means that motorists are strictly prohibited from driving in either the inside or outside emergency lanes, a rule intended to ensure safety for all roadway users.

The ESU program, previously implemented during high-traffic periods or emergencies, was designed to improve evacuation flow by temporarily permitting vehicles to use shoulder lanes. With the ESU deactivation, drivers must remain within the regular traffic lanes and reserve shoulder lanes solely for breakdowns, accidents, or other true emergencies.

Motorists caught driving on emergency shoulders outside of a verifiable emergency may face penalties, as FHP is committed to enforcing the regulation to prevent accidents and keep these lanes open for critical situations.

As travel and evacuation protocols are updated, FHP urges all drivers to remain attentive to these new regulations to maintain safe and efficient traffic flow.
