(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Chicago Police responded to a stalled freight train being targeted by thieves on Friday.

Video from over the scene shows dozens of people pulling packages off the train, including a lot of what looks like flat screen TV boxes.

The response caused issues for some people trying to get out of downtown.

Metro Union Pacific West Line trains were stopped near Kinzie Street due to this ongoing police activities. Extensive delays are anticipated and Metra encourages customers to seek alternate transport at this time.

Union Pacific issued the following statement around 8 p.m. Friday:

Union Pacific, along with the Chicago Police Department, responded to cargo thefts near Lake St. and Lockwood Avenue in Chicago earlier today. So far, six arrests have been made and some merchandise has been recovered.

The train was stopped, awaiting an interchange with a partner railroad, when thieves began opening containers. Rail burglaries are not victimless crimes, and they pose a safety threat to the public, our employees and local law enforcement officers.

An update from police around 5:30 p.m. stated that no one has been taken into custody.

This is a developing situation and we will provide more information when it becomes available.
