Detroit Business Leader Who Hosted Trump Fires Back After Ex-President Bashed City: ‘There’s Some Really, Really Great Things Happening Here’

The president and CEO of the Detroit Economic Club fired back after former President Donald Trump insulted the city at a campaign event on Thursday.

Steve Grigorian touted Detroit as a place where “great things” are happening after Trump denigrated it as an example of what the rest of the country could look like if he is not elected in November.

“Our whole country will end up being like Detroit if [Kamala Harris is] your president,” Trump said Friday while addressing the Detroit Economic Club during a campaign stop in Michigan. “You’re going to have a mess on your hands.”

Grigorian found himself in the position of defending Motor City against the comment while speaking with WDIV-TV.

“I would say I might disagree because you and I know that there’s some really, really great things happening here,” Grigorian said. “And when he mentioned that, you know, he will make Detroit come back, I don’t like that term – comeback. We’re doing really, really well right now. We can always do better. But I would disagree with that.”

Democratic Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan later ripped Trump in posts he shared on his X and Instagram accounts.

“Detroit just hosted the largest NFL Draft in history, the Tigers are back in the playoffs, the Lions are headed to the Super Bowl, crime is down and our population is growing,” Duggan tweeted . “Lots of cities should be like Detroit. And we did it all without Trump’s help.”

On his Instagram account, the mayor called Trump’s memory “fuzzy” while bragging about Detroit’s declining violent crime rates and population growth.
