Jeter trolls Ortiz on 2003 ALCS Game 7

Putting Derek Jeter and David Ortiz on set together was bold, but does create some great back and forth.

Ahead of the winner-take-all Game 5 of the NLDS between the San Diego Padres and Los Angeles Dodgers, the two once again brought up the historic rivalry between their respective teams. This time about the 2003 ALCS, Game 7.

Jeter brought up the fact that during the postseason, you have to get creative. In that case, New York Yankees pitcher Mike Mussina — who had only started to that point of his career — came in as a reliever.

The Yankees went on to win the series over the Boston Red Sox, but Jeter kept the talk going to remind Big Papi of that during the Fox pregame show.

Ortiz likes to bring up the 2004 season where the Red Sox not only took the ALCS from the Yankees, but would go on to win it all.

“I thought we were friends,” Ortiz said to Jeter.

“We are, I mean last year, it was all 2004 — at least you got a documentary on 2004,” Jeter responded.

Netflix announced its upcoming documentary “The Comeback: 2004 Boston Red Sox,” so at least Ortiz has that.

Jeter also brought up an interesting point. A question that’s been brought up a lot and asked from the players is if they view this game compared to a regular-season game.

“If you treat it like it’s any other game, then when you get into a Game 5 or Game 7, you don’t respond any differently,” Jeter said. “There’s not more pressure you, so I think that’s the key. The guys that get tight, the guys that get nervous, to now wake up and say, ‘Oh no, this game is more important.'”

It’s a common theme.

An MLB debut, high-leverage situation, or in this case — 27 outs away from the winter.
