What we know today as the Moonwalk is said to be an extension of James Brown's Happy Dance. Michael Jackson was credited with the moves in 1983 on the Motown 25 television special.

Jeffrey Daniels from the group Shalamar did it first in 1982 and later taught Jackson the moves. A Gap Band video reveals lead singer Charlie Wilson performed the backward slide on the original video of the song Burn Rubber in 1980.

The Gap band performed many times in Virginia

The Gap Band was famous in the 1980s and stopped in various Virginia towns during tours. Once, after performing in Roanoke, they were reportedly seen by several locals getting out of their limo at Woolworths on Campbell Avenue downtown on their way to Greensboro, NC.

In the Burn Rubber video, Wilson can be seen sliding backward in his boots twice. It's unclear who invented this dance, but Uncle Charlie had the moves before Daniels or Jackson.
