Packers WR Romeo Doubs Breaks Silence on Events that Led to Suspension

It’s been quite the tumultuous week for Green Bay Packers wide receiver Romeo Doubs.

Suspended for last week’s 24-19 win over the Los Angeles Rams for conduct detrimental to the team, Doubs is reportedly unhappy with his role in the Packers’ offense.

The 24-year-old wideout chose to express his frustrations by no-showing practice last Thursday and Friday, and upon returning to practice he shared a chilly welcome-back exchange with head coach Matt LaFleur during practice on Wednesday.

Now that he’s back with the team and will be playing in Sunday’s matchup against the Arizona Cardinals at Lambeau Field, Doubs seems to be in a better headspace, and he explained his side of what went down last week.

“I had some things going on mentally,” Doubs said . “I do not feel comfortable getting too deep into it. I did my best communicating, and I’m just thankful that I’m here right now. … It’s much bigger than just obviously me individually finding my role. In this league, it’s just winning football games.”

Through four games, Doubs is third on the Packers in receptions (12), yards (169) and yards per reception (14.1), and he ranks second in first downs (nine), fourth in targets (20).

After setting new career highs last season with 59 receptions, 96 targets, 674 yards and eight touchdowns, Doubs likely expected to be Green Bay’s No. 1 receiver this season. However, that role has gone to second-year WR Jayden Reed, who leads the Packers in every major statistical receiving category except touchdowns.

As a rookie last season Reed bested Doubs in receptions (64) and yards (793), tied him for touchdowns while having two fewer targets. It’s unclear if Doubs is content being Green Bay’s No. 2 option or if a trade could be on the horizon.
