A College Football Upset Happened On Friday Night

Week 7 of the 2024 college football season may have the most intriguing slate of games so far this year. Texas and Oklahoma will renew their Red River Rivalry. Ole Miss and LSU will play in a key SEC game. And two top-three teams will clash as Oregon hosts Ohio State.

But before the exciting Saturday, there was a game on Friday night that ended with an upset in the Big Ten.

The Northwestern Wildcats went into College Park and pulled off a 37-10 win over the Maryland Terrapins.

Maryland entered the game as 10.5-point favorites (ESPN Bet) but shot themselves in the foot with four turnovers that led to 20 Northwestern points: two touchdowns and two field goals.

Three were fumbles, including one on a sack that the Wildcats recovered in the end zone, and the other was a fourth-quarter interception.

Despite the multiple errors, the Terps still managed to beat Northwestern on offense, recording 355 yards to the Wildcats' 283. Still, Northwestern's defensive front was constantly in the backfield, recording three sacks and nine tackles for loss. The defensive backs got involved, too, with ten passes defended.

Wide receivers Bryce Kirtz and A.J. Henning carried the load for the Wildcats' offense, tallying 184 of the team's 283 total all-purpose yards. But quarterback Jack Lausch received the FS1 Player of the Game award after completing 10-of-18 passes for 203 yards while adding 24 yards and a score on the ground.

With the win, Northwestern moves to 3-3 overall on the season. It also picked up the first Big Ten win of the season, jumping to 1-2 in conference play. The Wildcats will host the Wisconsin Badgers in their next game in Week 8.

Maryland now also sits at 3-3 on the year, but it has yet to secure its first Big Ten win, falling to 0-3 in the conference. The Terrapins will get another shot at a conference win, with the USC Trojans coming to town in their next contest.
