Greene County native Sharon Brinson has been awarded The Old North State Award by Gov. Roy Cooper for dedication and service to the state of North Carolina.

Brinson retired on Sept. 1 after 25 years with the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.

The daughter of the late Earl J. and Vernice Brinson of Snow Hill, she is a 1979 graduate of Greene Central High School.

She earned a bachelor of science degree from East Carolina University and master of public administration degree from North Carolina Central University.

The Old North State Award is given to North Carolinians who have devoted at least 20 years of service to the state through their work and community service.

In addition to working in human resources at UNCG, Brinson has volunteered and held leadership positions within professional and community organizations. She also is an author.

The award is one of two service recognitions given by the state. The Order of the Long Leaf Pine recognizes North Carolinians with 30 or more years of service.
