‘My Heart Remains Open’: Lupita Nyong’o On Being Single Life & Embracing Her New Era

The Black Panther star recently opened up about her relationship status during an interview with Harper’s Bazaar UK , where she discussed love, healing, and her latest film, The Wild Robo t. In the interview, Lupita touched on her love journey, drawing an unexpected comparison between love and her beloved pet cat, whom she adopted a year ago.

“My love for my cat is singular. If I’m ever so lucky to be in a romantic relationship again, it’ll be because of him. I was ready to shut that door and lock it and bolt it,” Lupita shared in the interview, conducted over Zoom. “He has ensured that my heart remains open.”

Fans wonder, ‘Did Lupita Nyong’o and Joshua Jackson break up even before they really got started?’

This candid comment surprised some fans, who previously speculated about a possible romance between Lupita and actor Joshua Jackson . While the two were never officially confirmed as a couple, rumors swirled after they were spotted together multiple times. Headlines peaked when cameras caught the pair at a Los Angeles concert shortly after reports of Joshua’s impending divorce from actress Jodie Turner-Smith . Lupita and Joshua were even said to have vacationed in Mexico for her most recent birthday.

However, Lupita didn’t mention Joshua in the interview.

Lupita did reflect on her past public relationship with TV host Selema Masekela in the recent interview, discussing the lessons learned from that breakup. Like many of us, Lupita has taken time to heal and evolve, becoming a more self-aware version of herself.

She candidly admitted to the magazine that she often reflects on the toxicity of her past relationship. “You go through a lot of like, ‘Why? What were the signs? Why didn’t I see them? And if I did, why didn’t I act on them?’” Lupita shared.

“Also, replaying moments and thinking, ‘Oh, I felt this apprehension, and I ignored it. Why did I ignore it?’ It can get toxic to beat yourself up about a past you can’t change, but it’s also an opportunity to learn about yourself.”
