A former Miami-Dade Corrections and Rehabilitation officer is at the center of a case involving an elderly neighbor in Miramar, Florida. According to Local 10 News, Carmelia Regina Newbold, 51, was taken into custody by Broward County deputies on Thursday.

The report revealed that the case revolves around Thomas Edward Chiappetta, who lived next door to Newbold on Harbour Boulevard. Chiappetta's sister, who was his primary caregiver, passed away in 2020.

Following this, WSVN 7 News reported Newbold allegedly produced a durable power of attorney document, claiming it was signed by Chiappetta.

Broward Property Appraiser Marty Kiar and the Broward Sheriff's Office reported that the power of attorney gave Newbold control over Chiappetta and his assets.

However, the investigation found that Chiappetta did not have the mental capacity to sign such a document.

After obtaining the power of attorney, Newbold reportedly received proceeds from Chiappetta's sister's life insurance policy and his Social Security benefits. She was also reportedly named as the beneficiary of Chiappetta's life insurance policy.

But the matter took another turn when Newbold allegedly recorded a quitclaim deed, transferring ownership of Chiappetta's home to herself. Following this, Chiappetta was moved to a long-term care facility, where he later passed away.

Newbold is currently in the Broward Main Jail with a $100,000 bond. Jail records indicate that to post bond, she must prove the funds come from a legitimate source.
