The New York Yankees’ New Closer Has Already Put Himself In The Franchise’s History Books.

Luke Weaver has recorded a save in all three wins for the Yankees in the 2024 postseason. That puts the righty fifth all-time in franchise history for postseason saves. Mariano Rivera (42), Goose Gossage (7), John Wetteland (7), and Aroldis Chapman (6) are the only pitchers with more playoff saves for the Yankees.

Weaver has pitched in all four games for the Bronx Bombers in the American League Division Series against the Kansas City Royals. He closed out Game 1 while striking out three batters in 1.1 innings of work. The righty recorded the final out of the Yankees’ Game 2 loss as well.

The Yankees and Royals traveled to Kauffman Stadium with the series tied at 1. Game 3 entered the eighth inning tied before Giancarlo Stanton hit a solo home run to put the Bronx Bombers in front. Weaver pitched the final 1.2 innings to record his second save of the playoffs.

The Yankees took an early lead in Game 4 and Gerrit Cole threw seven solid innings. Clay Holmes pitched a scoreless eighth before giving the ball to Weaver who picked up his third save and sent the Yankees to the ALCS.

Weaver had four saves in 62 appearances during the regular season. He took over the closer duties in September as Holmes struggled to finish games.

2024 is the first time that Weaver has pitched in the postseason during his nine-year career.

The Yankees will play the winner of the series between the Detroit Tigers and Cleveland Guardians in the ALCS with Game 1 set for Monday.
